Illegal immigrant confesses to ID theft to take advantage of deportation
Most criminals try to escape justice, but a Framingham, MA resident turned himself in at a local police station last week for an ID theft crime only he knew had been committed. His motive? He’s an illegal immigrant who wants to return to his native Guatemala but can’t afford the airfare. His confession provided him with automatic deportation and a free ride home.
Carlos F. Boc, 29, said he’s been living in the United States illegally since he sneaked in through Mexico 13 years ago. He used to have a roommate from Puerto Rico, but when the man went back two years ago, Boc stole the man’s identity.
He gave police a birth certificate and Social Security number belonging to his former roommate, and a driver’s license in the other man’s name that bears Boc’s photo. Boc also provided evidence of his own real identity.
Now he’s unemployed and has no money, he said. Nighttime lows are predicted to be in the 30s this week, and he’s worried he might not survive the rapidly approaching winter weather. He’d like to go back to Guatemala, but one-way airfare is roughly $350, and that’s $350 Boc doesn’t have.
Boc said he felt his only solution was to confess to identity theft so he could get help leaving the U.S.; illegal aliens convicted of a felony are subject to deportation.
After his confession, Boc was charged with identity fraud, forgery and uttering. An automatic not guilty plea was entered on his behalf yesterday. His bail was set at $200 and he remains in jail. A pretrial conference is scheduled for October 13.
