Worst Person of the Week: Farm Equipment Store Owner Obtained 80 Loans in Customers’ Names Worth $1.7 million

Was it Jimmy Dean who once said, “down on the farm, we do it right. Or, we just don’t do it”? Well, sometimes not everything done down on the farm is completely righteous, and one nefarious character should have heeded the late Jimmy Dean’s words.

A Smithfield, Va. woman pleaded guilty last week to three federal charges, admitting she stole the identities of customers from her farm equipment store to obtain more than 80 loans worth $1.7 million. Linda T. Rowland, 60, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. She faces up to 20 years in prison but also a mandatory minimum sentence of two years’ incarceration just on the identity theft charge. Over the past 10 years, Rowland falsified loan agreements with the personal information of more than 30 customers.

So, a big congratulations to Linda Rowland, who not only tainted the perception of “down on the farm” work ethic, but also stole the identities of her customers. You are officially the “Worst Person of the Week.”
